Rocking and Rolling

Published in the Purcell Register
July 16, 2009

Heather Mead is rolling over the competition, literally.

Mead, rolling under the alias Blonde Bomber, is a member of the Red Dirt Rebellion Rollergirls based in Oklahoma City. Mead began participating in roller derby after a friend introduced her to some people in the sport and she said she loves it.

"I love to roller skate, I love the friendship and getting together as a league," Mead said.

Mead is one of more than 20 women in the Red Dirt Rebellion. If it wasn't for roller derby, these women could be confused for average Janes.

Mead is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma, another member is a meteorologist, one owns a restaurant and another is a mother of five children. Their ages range from 20 to over 40.

They race on old-school quad skates and not only dress the part of hard-hitting roller derby women, but they have names to match.

Mead's teammates are known as Suzi Uzi, Roxi Horror, Nikki Knockdown, Sham Rock, Psychogenesis, Mary Rotten and Smackety Anne just to name a few.

The all-women roller derby began in Oklahoma several years ago, but Mead and the rest of the Red Dirt Rebellion are the first to compete on a banked track.

The majority of roller derby matches are on a flat track, which is an easier format because competitions - known as jams - can be easily set up by taping off any flat surface.

The banked track is a throw-back to the 1970's when roller derby began.

Banked tracks number in the mid-teens in the United States, one of which is owned by the Red Dirt Rebellion.

The differences in flat track and banked track roller derby is that the banked track skaters build up more speed leading to harder hits, bigger crashes and more points.

Roller derby isn't what would traditionally be considered a girls sport. It's more like a cross between hockey, football and NASCAR.

Hard hits and scary spills are par for the course with track rash and bruises as battle scars for the derby girls.

Track rash is friction burns on the arms and legs from hitting and sliding on the track from falling. Scoring points in roller derby is as simple as passing opposing skaters, but that is where the hard hitting action is.

There are five skaters from each team on the track. One pivot, one jammer and three blockers. Pivots and blockers from both teams make up the pack.

Pivots control the speed of the pack and jammers score points by continually lapping the pack.

Mead is a jammer for the Red Dirt Rebellion.

The jammer gets one point for each opposing player they pass but as they try to weave through, it's like trying to run the gauntlet. The jammer is hit, shoved and checked into the side by blockers trying to derail the jammer.

The jammer that laps the pack first is considered the lead jammer and can stop the match at any time as a strategic maneuver.

The scoring sessions last for one minute and are called jams. The jams are strung together into quaters; four quarters equal a bout. Bouts last for approximately one hour.

The Red Dirt Rebellions first home turf bout was held Saturday night at the Cox Convention Center. They hosted the Arizona Derby Dames. They also competed in Austin, Texas, at the Battle of the Bank II where the faced the LA Derby Dolls, from Los Angeles, Calif., and Hurricane Alley Roller Derby (HARD), a Texas team.

The Red Dirt Rebellion Rollergirls is a league that consists of three teams, the Motley Cruisers, the Machine Gun Maulies and the Twilight Riot. However, because they don't have enough skaters, they race as one team.

They practice on Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays.

Sundays they encourage women to show up at practices to workout with the team. This Sunday, July 18, the Red Dirt Rebellion will be holding open tryouts for the league.

It will be held from noon to 3pm at 101 NE 16th Street in Oklahoma City (one block east of Broadway on NE 16th.)

Our very first home banked track bout!
Red Dirt Rebellion (70) vs. Arizona Derby Dames (139)

If you didn't see our bout at the COX Convention Center on Saturday, July 11th, then you TOTALLY MISSED OUT! Our first home game was incredible, complete with a sold out crowd of over 1,000 spectators! Our fans were amazing, the louder they screamed, the faster we skated. Arizona put up a good fight, and won the game in the end. But Red Dirt Rebellion won the hearts of every person who came to watch. We signed tons of autographs, and took hundreds of pictures! Our season schedule will be coming soon.

After 2 LONG years of hard work, dedication, constant practice, fundraising, and advertising, we FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY performed our very first home game on our very own banked track! Thanks to the Arizona Derby Dames, we created a huge fan base of banked track derby here in OKC. We were not at all expecting to sell out. Looking at all the signs, painted faces, and screaming fans with cameras really made us realize that this is going to be huge, and we're just so excited to be finally skating for real.

Contrary to a lot of roller derby games, our crowd actually got BIGGER after halftime! There was a YardDawgz game happening in the main arena of the COX Center, and we managed to pull quite a few of their spectators over to watch some roller derby. It was obvious that the Cox Center was not expecting that large of a crowd, because they sold out of beer within the very first quarter! We'll make sure they keep plenty in stock for next time ;)

Because tickets are general admission, make sure you come early to our next game so you can get a good seat. You don't wanna be left out in the heat while all your friends watch us kick ass again, do ya? We didn't think so!

Keep checking our website for updates on the most bad-ass rollergirls of the MIDWEST!

Captial Punishment: Battle on the Bank II

The National Banked Track Roller Derby Tournament (June 20-21, 2009)

We recently played in the National Banked Track Roller Derby Tournament in Austin, TX! Read the Day 1 Bout Recap for details. We had a great time, and played some great teams! Our rollergirls learned a lot, and kept their heads held high as they battled the LA Derby Dolls (champions of last year's tournament). Although we didn't win our 1st game, we came back with a vengance and were ready to kick ass the 2nd time around... which paid off as we WON our next game against Corpus Christi's Hurricane Alley Roller Derby! (Red Dirt Rebellion: 54 / Hurricane Alley: 32)Check out the PICTURES!!!

Red Dirt Rebellion vs. LA Derby Dolls

Red Dirt Rebellion vs. Hurricane Alley Roller Derby

As the rookies of the tournament, we had our work cut out for us. The LA Derby Dolls, as nice as they were, totally creamed us with a point spread of 185-2. OUCH!!! But that didn't stop us. We were not favored to win our second game against Hurricane Alley either, since they've been playing flat track games for several years and have had training by TXRD's Lonestar Rollergirls. We were determined to prove everyone wrong, we had the drive and the fire to play to win, and we did!

Talking with some of the spectators after the game, most of them said that our game against Hurricane Alley was "the best one of the first day" which really made us feel proud. We made a name for ourselves in Austin, and since then we've been bombarded with other teams wanting to come here to train us in OKC!

We had so much fun in Austin, we can't wait for the next year's tournament (held in San Diego, CA). We're planning to host the 2011 4th annual Battle On The Bank here in Oklahoma City!

Workin' Hard

Hello again! Sorry for such a long break in between posts. We've been swamped with 3 practices a week, recruiting, fundraising, and preparing for the upcoming NATIONAL ROLLER DERBY TOURNAMENT in Austin, TX next month!

To retrace our steps a bit, I'll start from right after our exhibition bout in McAlester last month...

When we got home from McAlester, the Board of Directors decided that it would be fun to surprise the girls by setting up the banked track without them knowing :) hee hee we're so sneaky! We rallied the troops (our menfolk and friends) for 2 nights of hard work, and got the track set up before the next League Practice. We told the girls to be at the warehouse for a "league meeting," and made them wait outside for about 30 minutes while we had a "BOD meeting" (we were actually finishing up the last pieces of masonite). So when the final screw was in place, we had all the girls gather by the big garage door for the "Grand Revealing"

We threw the door open, and like a kid on Christmas, it was a madhouse of screams, goosebumps, tears (of joy), and jumping around! Fortunately, we had a video & still camera inside the warehouse to capture the first moment on film :)

It was a wonderful surprise, and the next time the track's gotta be moved and/or set up, us Board members are gunna sit back with a "cold one" while the others get experience working on the track ;P lol naw j/k!

-----------------------------

ANYway... We're still working hard to get everything lined out, and hopefully our first bout season will be finalized within the next couple of weeks - with our first bout probably being towards the middle/end of this summer.

We have some pretty awesome ADVERTISING SPECIALS right now, take a look on our "Sponsors" page on our website (www.reddirtrebellion.com) to check out what we're offering for the month of May.

Roller Derby (and especially banked track derby) is a large-scale production, which requires $$$ to perform bouts. We're still looking for advertisers and sponsors to help us get the ball rolling so we can show this town what we've been DOING for the past 2 years!!!

Keep checking back, we'll be posting our season schedule soon......

BUSY BUSY BUSY!!!

Red Dirt Rebellion is moving so fast, it's hard to keep this blog updated! So much has happened in the last couple of weeks, here's an update....

Since our last blog, we've finally SET UP OUR BANKED TRACK!!!! Yes, it's true, Oklahoma's ONLY banked track is finally up and working :) Here is a picture of "The Beast"

Actually, this is a pretty cool story :) But before I get into that, I gotta tell you about our very first exhibition bout in McAlester last weekend!

The bout was awesome!! We skated at the McAlester Expo Center, which is a HUGE venue. We split the league into 2 teams: "The White Widows" and "The Blue Balls." Everyone played an incredible game... there were a lot of hard hits a tough spills. But in the end, the White Widows pulled ahead with a 59-48 point win. The crowd loved it, and we spent an extra 45 minutes after the bout signing autographs! Here are a few photos (you can view more on our MySpace page www.myspace.com/cb9originalplayaa):

The bout was awesome, and we're so proud of all the girls for putting in their best efforts and kickn' major ass!

Before the exhibition bout, the Board of Directors decided that it would be pretty cool to surprise our girl by setting up the banked track without them knowing :) So once we got back from McAlester, we rallied the troops and managed to secretly set up the banked track in 2 days, so when they showed up to practice the next Thursday... it was a TOTAL SURPRISE!!!! We got the whole thing on video, and it was exciting to see the looks on their faces when we opened the big garage door to reveal a completely constructed BANKED TRACK!!! HEE HEE!

It's getting pretty late, so I'll try to update again tomorrow (or at least later this week).

Frequently Asked "Derby" Questions, "Derby Lingo"

We've been working extra hard on our website over the last few weeks. We've added a TON of helpful derby information, a Frequently Asked Questions page, definitions of "Derby Lingo," and we've finally got the WALL OF PAIN up!!! I know that's what you've have been waiting for all this time ;) We've got a few more website tricks up our sleeve, so check back every day to see what other updates we're making!

We're also practicing really hard for our upcoming exhibition bout in McAlester next Saturday, April 18th! Lastnight's practice was awesome, especially since we had our entire Referee staff there. We managed to do a complete bout run-through, and it was definitely a workout!

We can't wait to get our track set up and start skating on it! We only have 2 more months to prepare for "BATTLE ON THE BANK II" (the once-a-year national banked track roller derby tournament, held in Austin, TX this summer!) Start saving your money NOW so you can travel with us to Austin and cheer us on as we skate against some of the biggest known names in ROLLER DERBY!

We've got lots of work to do!!! :)

Track is moved, time to practice!

GREAT NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!

We finally got our track moved into our NEW BUILDING on Saturday!!! How exciting!!! It took about 20 people, 3 huge flatbet trailers, 4 truck loads, and close to 5 hours... but we got it done! We are super stoked to be in our new warehouse, it's the perfect practice area for us :)

Right now we are preparing for our upcoming "exhibition bout" in McAlester on April 18th, and since it will be a flat track bout, we are continuing to practice on a temporary flat track for a couple weeks. As soon as we get this "exhibition bout" under our belts we'll be assembling the track and making repairs so we can be ready for our debut home bout season!

Sunday was the "Pennies From Heaven" celebration to bring awareness to teen suicide. Tracy Neely (aka: F5) is a retired rollergirl who's 15 year old son, Andrew, committed suicide 2 years ago. Red Dirt Rebellion was happy to attend the fundraiser in rememberance of Andrew Neely and to help bring awareness to this growing problem. It was a beautiful event, and our prayers and thoughts are always with Tracy and her family. News 9 was there to interview Tracy, read the full story HERE.

More updates to come!

New Website!!!

I've been working on our website a lot the last few days, and it's really starting to come together! Our goal is to make our site the most comprehensive, user-friendly, easy to navigate roller derby website in the area! With information about where to buy skates/gear, and a page dedicated to "Frequently Asked Derby Questions," it's the one-stop site to find out anything you want to know about roller derby in Oklahoma! And by keeping everything in-house (designed and maintained by our own rollergirls) we have the ability to keep it updated with all the latest info at all times!

Practice is SO MUCH FUN!!!!!

O - M - G - !!!!!!

That's all I have to say about last night's practice! Our new girls are kicking so much ass, and showing incredible improvement! And not just the "new girls"... EVERYONE!!!

We started off the night going right into a booty blocking drill, which was also a bit of endurance. Who am I kidding... booty blocking takes A LOT of endurance! We paired "newbies" with "vets" to give the new girls a better practice, and it definitely paid off. We had the girls switch partners several times, and by the end of the drill everyone was warmed up and ready to scrimmage.

We did a quick "Pack 40" drill (created by the one and only "Clean Chuck" - former ref and trainer of Tulsa's "Green Country Roller Girls") where the girls skate in a pack (shoulder-to-shoulder) for 40 laps around the track, and the drill doesn't stop until EVERY skater completes the full 40 laps. It's a great pack-awareness drill, and also helps with team-building because it requires the girls to communicate to each other within the pack. If someone starts to fall behind, a more advanced skater must fall back to give her a push or a whip to help her catch up.

Outstandingly, EVERYONE finished the drill in an RDRR record time!

By 8:30pm, the girls were chomping at the bit to start scrimmaging. We finished the night with well over an hour of full-on, hard-hitting, fast-skating SCRIMMAGING. Everyone got the chance to participate, and to my surprise, I saw some incredible "jammer" potential in several of the new girls!!! I was so impressed by the entire practice that I got as giddy and excited as a little school girl :)

During cool-down stretches, we high-fived each other and congratulated the new girls on such an awesome performance. The entire league erupted with a round of applause!

Most of us went home to doctor our temporary wounds, with grins on our faces and derby in our heads!

If you want to join the fun, and become a real-life banked track ROLLERGIRL... then contact us via email: contact@reddirtrebellion.com. If you wanna be part of the "family" but don't wanna get hurt, we'd still love to have you on the league as a REFEREE, or a member of our PRODUCTION CREW.

We have several other positions available as well, including Stats/Score Keepers, Announcer, Cheerleaders, Mascot(s), Ticket Takers, and many many other volunteer-based positions!

UPDATE!!!

Wow! Sorry it's been so long since we've blogged, Red Dirt Rebellion has been SUPER busy lateley. I have a lot to talk about, so I'll try to make each item brief...

We've FINALLY found a building to house our banked track! After almost 2 years since the formation of Red Dirt Rebellion, we are now on our way to scheduling our first bout season! We hope to perform our Debut Bout this coming summer.

We'll be meeting at the storage unit at 9:00am Saturday morning (March 28th) to start loading up and moving the track to it's new location. We could use all the help we can get, the more people we have helping, the faster it will go.
All Storage
4500 Deer Ridge Blvd
Oklahoma City, OK 73127
(405) 350-7370‎

If you plan to come out, please bring a pick up or a flatbed trailer if you can :)
FREE BEER will be available to all those who come help!
----------------------
In other news... Although our Debut Banked Track Bout will not be until this summer, Red Dirt Rebellion Rollergirls is scheduled for our first public "exhibition scrimmage" at the McAlester Expo Center, in McAlester OK., Saturday April 18th! Since our banked track needs a few minor repairs from it's use in the movie production, we will be performing this exhibition scrimmage on a flat track. Our girls have been working extremely hard to prepare for their first public appearance, we've actually added a 3rd practice to our weekly schedule! The league will be split down the middle, half-and-half; Blue vs. White. The girls will then scrimmage against each other as if they were performing a regular season-scheduled bout, with Referee's calling out penalties and points being kept. Concessions & Beer will be available (must have valid ID for alcohol purchases). We are expecting a crowd of around 700+. Tickets are $10 flat rate, with children 6 and under FREE.

----------------------------------
Moving on...
Last month, to our wonderful surprise, we were formally invited to participate in the National Banked Track Tournament this summer, being held in Austin, TX! We discussed the tournament as a league, and have decided to put together a Travel Team for this tournament :) We couldn't be more excited (or nervous) to play against some of the top-ranked derby leagues in the country, including: TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls, L.A. Derby Dolls, & San Diego Derby Dolls. Also participating in the tournament this year, is Grand Strand Roller Girls, from Myrtle Beach, and WFTDA's "Team Awesome". Last summer was the first annual National Banked Track Tournament, held in L.A., but we were in the midst of finishing our track, shipping it to Detroit, and dealing with medical emergencies (see first blog post), and unfortunately were not able to participate in the tournament. We got our ducks in a row this year, and we wouldn't miss the opportunity to participate for the WORLD! As the "rookie" league of Banked Track Roller Derby, we are fully aware that we'll probably get a royal ass-whoopin'! But the experience alone is enough to put a grin on all our faces :)

The summer of 2009 has A LOT in store for Red Dirt Rebellion, including ROLLERCON!!!!! For those outside of the derby community... RollerCon is the once-a-year, world-wide roller derby convention, always held in fabulous Las Vegas! With daily on-skates workshops, scrimmages in the middle of Fremont Street, and a "derby wedding" including an Elvis Minister, trains made of toilet paper, and hundreds of rollergirls getting hitched to their "Derby Wives"... it is the mecca of derby get-togethers.

We also took some new League pictures a few weeks ago, as well as some individual pictures of the girls. Here is the latest league picture. Click the link provided to view individual pics of the girls: Meet The Girls!
Thanks for reading, and I promise to update more often in the future!

Jan. 23rd, 2009

WOW! It's been a really long time since we've updated our blog! Well, here's what we've been up to since our last post...

We finally got our track done! With the help of our dedicated husbands, friends, family members and fans, we were able to complete construction of the track in just under 12 months. We can't tell you how proud we are to have finished in such a short time-frame. The day we finished building the darn thing, we had to break it down and ship it to Detroit, MI., to be used in Drew Barrymore's movie "Whip It!" The movie should be release sometime this spring / summer.

During our final days of construction this past summer, we had a slew of unfortunate accidents within the league. 3 of our skater's family members were injured in totally separate freak accidents, all within a week of each other! First, Kitty Killmore's son was hit by a car on his skateboard. He suffered several broken bones in his leg & skull. Then 2 days later, Suzi Uzi's husband was also hit by a car (on his bicycle), and thrown over a highway overpass, landing on the highway below. He suffered over 40 broken bones and spent a month in the hospital. While Suzi was in the ICU with her husband, Psychogenesis' husband was involved in a motorcycle accident. He suffered a broken scapula and severe road rash. We are happy to report that all injured parties are alive and well!

Although our ladies have been through a lot during the past year, they never lost sight of the longterm goals. While our track was in Detroit for 3 months, we took a couple of weeks to relax and bask in our accomplishment. Our vacation was short lived, and then it was immediately back to the grindstone. We hit the pavement running... looking for buildings to put our track in, holding fundraiser after fundraiser, all while continuing to hold practices twice a week.

We got our track back in September, and have continued to stay busy with fundraisers, events, public appearances, practices and recruitment. We participated (for the 2nd year in a row) in the OKC Gazette's Ghouls Gone Wild Halloween Parade. We had a blast! Our theme was "BANKED TRACK BACK FROM THE DEAD" and decorated a float to look like a cemetary. We also learned and performed Michael Jackson's THRILLER dance throughout the parade! (pics on our myspace) We had only a few months to learn and perfect the 5 minute dance, but the crowd was extremely impressed (so we heard). Next year we plan to perform it again.... ON SKATES!!! Because we are that bad ass.

We gave our girls some time off during the winter / holiday season to spend time with their families and relax. Now that it's a new year, we're ready to get back to business! We are still in search of the perfect building for our track (if you thought building the track was hard, try finding a place to put it!)

News 9 came to the skating rink lastnight to film us and get the update on our league. Once the story airs tonight (and tomorrow morning) we hope it will spark people's interest and lead to a prospective place to set up our track and practice.

So that's the latest on Red Dirt Rebellion Rollergirls! Check back again soon! Now that we have our website (almost) finished, we will keep our News Blog updated with all of our upcoming events, fundraisres, appearances, and whatever else we decide to post on here.

Thanks for reading!
